Another outstanding last few weeks of largemouth bass fishing in South Florida. Today we landed 140 laregmouth but mostly small all on plastic baits. Over the last couple weeks the canal system of South Florida has been producing peacock bass and largemouth despite all the rumors of bad fish kills. South Florida Peacock Bass
Marcia and George Darnell from right here in Coral Gables, Florida have never fished for Peacock Bass before even though they are right in their own back yard. George has fished all over the world it seems and had the pleasure of boating 25 peacock bass up to 4 lbs. along with his daughter who now lives in northern Alabama. We had a slight fish kill a few weeks back but everything seems to have rebounded by these numbers, so it looks like the spring spawn will be great. South Florida Peacock Bass
Mike Kenny and I were out on January 2, 2010 and Mike landed over 20 peacocks himself despite high 40 degree temperatures in the morning. Peacock bass are Amazon cichlids and cold water can kill them especially below 60 degrees. So to be able to find and locate and catch these species under these conditions is sometimes difficult. Mike had no problem evidenced by this beautiful 5 lb. fish. South Florida Peacock Bass
South Florida Peacock Bass fishing has been great over the last two to three months with some quite large fish being caught in the canals of south Miami. In early November John White caught this beautiful 7 lb. peacock bass on his first fish of the day. Just a week ago Mike Kenny from Washington D.C. landed a nice 5 lb. fish despite all these cold days we’ve been getting. Most of our fish have been caught on live bait with the occasional artificial lure producing a few strikes. South Florida Peacock Bass Fishing In Miami
We’ve had quite a few fishing days for peacock bass this summer with good success. Last week Jonathan Johnson of Ohio and I were out in Miami whacking fish for three days. We boated probably 15 fish per day up to 4 lbs. Jonathan loves peacock bass fishing so much he wants to move to South Florida. He has a eight inch peacock in a aquarium at home. This is one of his nice butterfly peacocks he caught during the second week of August.

South Florida Everglades Bass Fishing
Luis and I were out last week in the heat of South Florida everglades trying to catch some largemouth bass. We get out often to try and figure out these bass fishing patterns. We landed about fourteen bass up to 5 lbs. which isn’t bad for this time of year. The summer usually brings a lot of rain and high water to the Everglades making bass fishing tough. So to catch these numbers was quite enjoyable. Lake Okeechobee has been good early in the morning before the sun will chase you off the water. Here’s the nice bass I caught on a Gambler Giggy head with a floating worm down deep.

South Florida Peacock Bass Fishing
It’s time for South Florida Peacock Bass fishing now that the water is heating up. We boated 7 nice peacocks up to 5 lbs. on March 14th. We’ve been waiting for this time for awhile. The cold fronts have been keeping the water colder than normal. The Everglades for largemouth bass is also getting better now that the spawn should be complete. South Florida Bass Fishing
Bass fishing in the winter and spring in South Florida is usually slow because of hot water and high levels. Over the last few weeks it’s been totally the opposite. Me and my guide Capt. Victor Cole have been out in the Everglades quite a few times over the last month and continue to catch impressive numbers of largemouth bass. Size has been small mostly but on each trip we’ve managed a few fish to at least 4 to 5 lbs. As 2009 approaches I’m assuming the bass fishing is only going to improve dramatically. We normally have to wait until March before the fishing is improves. South Florida Peacock Bass Fishing
Yesterday we fished with Tim & Heather Gray in Miami and they boated 7 peacock bass up to 4 lbs. Heather landed the largest fish of the day at 4 lbs. The water has cooled down somewhat slowing the bite until the water warms up a few degrees. Each week is different during the winter so we have to deal with these conditions until we have steady weather.
